Louie (2013, 115) explains: “Note that the processor f is that which entails, and the output (effect) b is that which is entailed. Because of the location of the symbols with respect to the arrows, ‘that which entails’ may be identified with the (tail of the) solid-headed arrow, and ‘that which is entailed’ may be identified with the (head of the) hollowheaded arrow. Stated otherwise, if something entails, then it needs to initiate a solid-headed arrow; if something is entailed, then it needs to terminate a hollowheaded arrow.”
