In a similar way—but with a view to psyches—Scott Atran describes memes: “[...] memes serve only themselves. Just as genes or viruses use individual bodies to replicate and propagate, so memes alle­gedly use the minds that host them as (potentially disposable) transport vehicles. Cultures and religions are coalitions of memes seeking to maximize their own fitness, regardless of fitness costs for their human hosts” (Atran 2002, 17).
